IPÊ's Lowland Tapir Conservation Initia

IPÊ's Lowland Tapir Conservation Initia logo BRAZIL - The Instituto de Pesquisas Ecologicas (IPE - Institute for Ecological Research) is a non-governmental organization formally created in 1992, in the city of Piracicaba, Sao Paulo State, Brazil. The institution works for the conservation of biodiversity and develops conservation projects in several Brazilian ecosystems. Through student programmes and a focus on the conservation of the tapir we aim to protect on of the most precious and threatened areas in Brazil.

Most of IPEs projects are conducted in the Atlantic Forest of Sao Paulo and Parana States, but the institution is also active in many other regions and biomes of Brazil, including the Amazon. IPEs conservation work is based on multidisciplinary research that defines planning and action. Research on endangered species and ecosystems has been an important focal point to trigger other conservation areas. Training has always been one of the most important components of IPEs work. Environmental education and agro-forestry programmes have been crucial to turn the scientific findings into tools for public involvement and participation.

In 1996, IPEs headquarters moved to Nazare Paulista, a place of great scenic beauty located at only one and a half hour from the capital city of Sao Paulo and near to the best university centres of the country. This strategic location and also the significant demand for conservation courses led to the construction of a specific facility in Nazare Paulista: the IPE Conservation Training Centre, now one of IPEs most important contributions to conservation, as more than 500 students from all over Latin America have attended a variety of conservation courses. Over the years, IPEs field projects have served as important training sites for university students and researchers who need technical and practical expertise. The highlight of IPEs courses is the mixture of theory with hands-on learning, unusual in Brazil. IPE has established international partnerships over the years and received support from internationally and nationally recognized NGOs, governments, and universities.
