Society for the Coast Poland

Society for the Coast Poland logo POLAND - The Society For The Coast is a small non governmental organisation managing and owning a large area of unique wetlands located in the north-west of Poland. Established in 1996, active nature conservation and nature oriented development has been our core mission of all actions we undertake.

A group of enthusiastic professionals decided to implement their dreams and missions here close to the Szczecin Lagoon and in 2005 the Odra Delta Nature Park has been established: 4,000 hectares of "Bird Paradise" where man and nature coexist. Most of the area is situated on the eastern part of the Szczecin Lagoon, which is a part of Odra river estuary. Wetlands, open space of semi-natural meadows and the peninsulas, islands and water areas of the lagoon create together a fantastic area that serves as a model to conserve and protect more then 160 species of birds and interesting habitats with many protected plants. For all people that are interested to see a postglacial landscape architecture that remained natural and relatively undisturbed from influence of humans, the Odra Delta is the ideal place to visit.

We welcome many visitors, and all of our protected area is a kind of open laboratory to scientists, nature lovers and all who like to know more about real European nature. The presence of White-tailed-eagles, Corncrakes, Cranes, Redshanks, Fish eagles, Gooses, Lapwings, Golden-eyes, as well as Marsh Harriers make this Delta a Delta of international relevance. Moreover, the chance to meet an Aquatic Warbler is the strongest invitation to all who help to keep this area for the next generations and to protect this area for the future.

All areas of the Odra Delta Nature Park gained special preservation status by designation to the European Ecological Network named Natura 2000. The Odra Delta hosts over 35 birds species that have special conservation status and as such are indicated at the list of endangered species of the Birds Directive. Through this Directive, the Odra Delta Nature Park has the explicit responsibility to pay extra attention to these endangered species.

The projects described here construct a specific "patchwork" of actions, on-going activities and work that is focused on one mission: active nature conservation with all kind of elements helpful to keep and maintain the natural values for a longer time, and for next generations. Agriculture, which is our tool for nature conservation is also oriented to offer income to local people, in particular the ecologically friendly production of meat of cows or the production of hay. This is however until today quite limited, and rather a concept for local development as compared to the traditional "postkolkhoz" way of life. Outdoor education, special for young generation create a "bridge of knowledge" special in the edge of extremely fast growing number of information. For these activities support is needed, to be sure then in couple of years we still would be able to give freedom to the nature and added values to the mankind.
