Nagenahiru Foundation
SRI LANKA - The Nagenahiru Foundation in Sri Lanka that has the goal of conserving and restoring mangrove forests. The Foundation is a non commercial and non-profit NGO, registered in 1991. Until today, the foundation succeeded in restoring about 15 hectares. Other environmental protection activities are implemented in a teaching and training center that focuses particularly on creating ecological consciousness in particular for young people.
The Nagenahiru Foundation integrates a number of very different and diversified projects under the main goal of sustainability and environmental protection. The major environmental goal is the restoration of mangrove forests. Since 2004 the foundation is the partner organization of the international Living Lakes Network at the lakes Maduganga and Madampe in Sri Lanka.
The introduction of solar power light for night fishing and trap catching of shrimps has very positive effects on the health of the people, because it avoids the negative effects of kerosene. With regard to poverty alleviation, the foundation initiated two projects where coconut fibers and reed are used to produce different household articles.
The lakes Maduganga and Madampe are located on the south-western coast of Sri Lanka in the Indian Ocean. They are twin lakes connected by a narrow channel of 3 kilometres in length. The surface areas of the lakes cover 915 hectares and 390 hectares, respectively. The region is one of the most beautiful and picturesque landscapes in Sri Lanka. According to a study conducted by the IUCN in 2000 the Maduganga Lake has one of the most unique biodiversity including different vegetation types such as the predominating mangroves and marshlands.
