Zululand Rhino Reserve
SOUTH AFRICA - The Zululand Rhino Reserve is an endangered species reserve situated near the world famous Greater St Lucia Wetland Park in South Africa. The reserve was established on the 1st of July 2004, by a visionary group of private landowners who believed in the need to grow the African conservation footprint. Specific emphasis is given on creating space for the conservation of the highly threatened Black Rhino. The global Black Rhino population was about 65.000 in 1972. Twenty years later, less than 5% of this population remained. Since then conservation efforts have managed to keep this remnant population alive, however, this has only been achieved through intensive conservation management and the intensive protection of these remaining animals.
Our vision is to develop a pristine protected area as conservation site for indigenous and endangered species in northern Kwazulu-Natal. We are a bunch of ordinary people committed to preserving endangered spaces. We join forces with WWF and the Ezemvelo KZN Wildlife to make a strong stand for the protection of the rhino. Our activities encompass monitoring on a daily basis to protect them against poaching by international rhino horn syndicates, check their health, and to determine their ranging, feeding and social behaviour. Based on this information we can develop management strategies for successful breeding.
The reserve encompasses over 22,000 hectares of land and is run as a formally protected conservation area. The reserve lies within the Msunduzi valley in north-western Zululand in the province of Kwa-Zulu Natal, South Africa. The area falls under the Mkuze Valley Lowveld vegetation, varying from open Savanna thornveld, bushveld to riverine woodland, characterized by Acacia’s and Marula tree species, as well as Thickets in low lying areas. This provides an ideal habitat for the Black Rhino.
On the 26th October 2006 the ZRR was registered as a Site of Conservation Significance by Ezemvelo KZN Wildlife (Provincial Conservattion Authority). The reserve is currently being Procliamed as a Protected Area under the National Environmental Management: Protected Areas Act (Act No. 57 of 2003).
