Ecotrópica
BRAZIL - Ecotrópica is a Brazilian non-governmental organisation that is occupied with the daily management of 120,000 acres of fantastic nature with thousands of species of mammals, birds, reptilians, fishes, insects, plants and bio-geo-chemical cycles. Hundreds of endangered species have their home at this place. Jaguar, ocelot, giant anteater, marsh deer, manned wolf, giant river otter, caiman, macaw, parakeet, hawk, deer, capybara, jabiru stork, monkey, tapir, vulture, anaconda, all have their home protected on this site.
Ecotrópica owns and manages the Acurizal, Penha, Dorochê and Rumo ao Oeste Preserves. These preserves are located in the buffer zone of the Pantanal National Park. Together they form the UNESCO World Natural Heritage Site of the Pantanal, and offer a migration corridor for the wildlife of the National Park.
The Pantanal is one of the most immense, pristine and biologically rich environments on the planet. Often referred to as the world's largest freshwater wetland system, it extends through millions of hectares of central-west Brazil, eastern Bolivia and north-eastern Paraguay. With its extraordinarily concentrated and diverse flora and fauna, and a landscape spanning a variety of ecological sub-regions, the Pantanal stands as one of the world's great natural wonders.
To protect all the different habitats of all species against fire, poaching, hunting and diseases, Ecotrópica needs a lot of equipment, fuel, staff, material for maintenance of infrastructure and services. One approach to protect biodiversity of the Pantanal is the creation of protected areas. At Ecotropica we call this kind of conservation of nature “in situ”. Ecotropica’s staff make this possible and extend where possible. We are also involved with other activities with a broader watershed focus. We do this to try to change public policies and public use of the entire watershed that maintains the Pantanal alive.
