Jaguar Monitoring Project Jaguar Monitoring Project

Jaguar Monitoring Project logo The Jaguar is the largest cat on the American continents and the third largest cat worldwide. Its distribution spreads from Northern Mexico to Northern Argentina. The Sierra Gorda forms part of the range of the Jaguar population of northeast Mexico, which is one of the most threatened in all of Mexico.

Among other direct and indirect methods of studying Jaguars, we are using camera traps in our Jaguar Monitoring Project in the Sierra Gorda Biosphere Reserve, with the goal of determining the cats distribution, habitat use, home range, and patterns of dispersal. With the cameras we are also gathering useful information about many other wildlife species. Apart from serving as a tool for the conservation of this species, this evidence and information about the biodiversity of the area allows us to integrate wildlife protection into our program of Payment for Ecosystem Services. This program is helping to build an economy of conservation in the Sierra Gorda via specific management practices that ensure, among other things, hydrologic recharge, storage and sequestration of carbon, and now the protection of biodiversity through the Jaguar as an umbrella species. These activities comprise the products in our integrated ecosystem services packages. Several tools that will help with the monitoring of Jaguars and biodiversity in the Sierra Gorda are included in the catalogue.
