The Ocean Watch project has the purpose to increase our understanding of the status, numbers and life-history patterns for many sea species. There is still a large knowledge-gap. This is mainly due to the difficulties of studying animals who spend most of their time under water or who inhabit deep, off-shore regions. Ultimately the Ocean Watch Project will contribute to the protection of this vulnerable Mid-Atlantic cetacean breeding area as our results will provide an advisory function in the long-term sustainable management of the unique marine ecosystem of the Azores. We strongly believe that a better understanding will lead to a Marine Protected Area for Cetaceans.
