In the Risso project, we conduct research on the Risso dolphin (Grampus griseus). Very little is known about the social behaviour and population structure of the Risso dolphin. We aim to understand and describe the life history patterns, the social structure, feeding patterns, mating strategies and population size at the Azores of this unknown dolphin species. So far little is known, we realize that an increased understanding about this dolphin species is the key to its conservation and the preservation of its habitat. With our research on the spatial and temporal distribution of the dolphins, combined with time budget analysis and population parameters, we aim to determine the habitat use of dolphin species in Azorean waters and the importance of the remote, isolated waters for these animals.
