Conservation Clubs logo In order to raise awareness about the natural environment and biodiversity, Centre ValBio has developed various outreach programmes. One of the most successful of these has been the creation of Conservation Clubs – a forum for young people to get together to learn about their immediate environment and to receive practical training in alternatives to traditional “slash and burn” agriculture.

The Conservation Club programme runs in rural villagers round Ranomafana National Park. It targets both school attendees and those who have left school (or who never went) to develop training in environmentally sound activities to convert them into advocates for the environment.

Club members participate in the conservation of the National Park by learning about the biodiversity of the region and about sustainable alternatives to forest degradation, and by developing their communication skills allowing them to bring awareness activities into their own communities. Club members gradually become relay groups, able to sustain and spread the awareness activities launched by Centre ValBio.

The Conservation Club programme is a way of gainfully occupying youngsters and giving them awareness and training otherwise unavailable to them. There are currently 15 Conservation Clubs, but we want to expand this programme.

The objectives of this programme are to:

1) Increase the number of Conservation Clubs by creating 5 new ones per year to cover additional villages on the east and west sides of Ranomafana National Park

2) To increase the capacity of Conservation Club leaders to develop environmental education by holding an annual training workshop

3) To deliver quarterly on-site training for Conservation Clubs on the east and west sides of the National Park

4) To support each Conservation Club to develop a demonstration site in sustainable agricultural techniques in their village

5) To organise two exchange visits between Clubs per year to stimulate exchange of experiences between Club leaders
