Eco-tourism logo The endemic bird species, the pitta-like ground roller (Atelornis pittoides) is one of the “hot” tourist attractions of Ranomafana National Park. Many tourists and birders want to see this species. However, this bird nests in ground burrows, making it very vulnerable to habitat disturbance and habitat loss. It occurs only in the eastern rainforest of Madagascar. Previous research demonstrated that Atelornis pittoides’ breeding success decreased during years of heavy tourist activities at Ranomafana National Park

The purpose of this study is to undertake long-term monitoring of nests of Atelornis pittoides, and to assess the effects of tourism on predation rates. In addition, to develop education materials and train the tourist guides so that the impact of tourists (and mongooses) on the species can be reduced.

This project will contribute to the long-term conservation of the pitta-like ground roller (Atelornis pittoides), as well as the other endemic bird species within Ranomafana National Park, especially threatened ground nesters, such as the Madagascar wood rail (Canirallus kioloides) and low level nesters, such as the brown mesite (Mesitornis unicolor).

The main activities will include:

1) Locating and following burrows and monitoring reproductive success of pitta-like ground rollers

2) Assessing carnivore activity, abundance, and impact on Atelornis pittoides

3) Training local tourist guides and park personnel in Atelornis pittoides biology and vulnerability

4) Designing detours around burrows in collaboration with park personnel

5) Producing information panels and leaflets aimed at raising tourist awareness about vulnerable birds during the breeding season
