Snow Leopard Conservation in Mongolia

For over a decade, the Snow Leopard Trust has been working in Mongolia, which has some of the richest snow leopard habitat in all of Central Asia. The Altai Mountains running from the country's northwest corner down through the Great Gobi in the south may be home to as many as 1,000 wild snow leopards, the second-largest population of snow leopards in the world. This makes Mongolia one of the most important regions for conservation in the world.
The Snow Leopard Trust works with rural herders in Mongolia to help them increase their income. Through a program called Snow Leopard Enterprises, we help them turn the wool from their camels, yak and sheep into fine crafts like yarn, hats and rugs. In turn, they help us protect snow leopards and snow leopard prey species.
The Snow Leopard Trust is also conducting the largest, most comprehensive snow leopard study in history. This study is taking place in southern Mongolia, in the South Gobi Province. Snow leopards are one of the least studied of the big cats, but thanks to this study we are already uncovering exciting new information, such as how snow leopards travel and how much space they need for their home ranges.
