Snow Leopard Education and Research in China logo China is home to an estimated 2,000-2,500 snow leopards, this is the worlds largest snow leopard population. The Snow Leopard Trust began working in China in 2004, and is initially focusing its work in Xinjiang province, which may harbour one-third of China’s snow leopards. In Xinjiang, snow leopards are threatened by the encroachment of local herding communities, and each year at least 30 snow leopards are illegally killed for their hides or other body parts. In order to establish effective conservation programs, we first need to assess the status of nearby wildlife and empower local park staff to help us track and monitor changes to the well-being of snow leopards and their prey. In this project education and research are core objectives.
