For the Guyanas, the special combination of geological and climatological factors makes it an area with a remarkable high degree of botanical diversity. There are many rare and endangered species that only live here, they are of endemic nature. Large parts of the area consist of nearly undisturbed primary rain forest, which enclose a number of unique and also undisturbed and therefore rare, wet savannas.
Threats applicable especially to the Kaw-area and thus also to Trésor, vary in nature and extent. At this moment the most important of these threats is open-pit goldmining. Huge clearings are literally slashed in the rainforest in order to set up industrial areas and to build roads into and through the forest. Moreover, forest is cut to create depots for the sludge waste of the goldmining. An unavoidable but huge side-effect of these mining activities is the opening up of the forest to hunters and collectors to perform their (illegal) activities. On top of that we also face illegal cutting activities in the area, especially along roads, paths and rivers, where trees are cut and burnt down to make place for small plantations.
Because of its uniqueness, the area is a popular for scientific research. Inventories are regularly undertaken, scientists from France, the Netherlands, United Kingdom, United States visit to learn about the various aspects of the flora and fauna. To enhance awareness at tourists and other interested people educational facilities are established, such as botanical trails and the building of an information centre.
