Corncrake Corner: management in the wetland
Skip the list below and go directly to the project information
Apart from areas of land, the Odra delta Nature Park consists of many watery surfaces. The Szczezin Lagoon plays an important role in balancing the water level. However, due to agricultural practices the water levels in the surrounding land areas, islands and peninsulas has historically been kept as low as possible. It is crucial to restore the level of water as many species typically for wetland areas need swampy areas. In particular birds such as Corncrakes, White tailed eagles and Cranes depend on wet areas. Fauna species such as beavers, deer, wild boars and foxes will profit alongside.
To improve the level and circulation of water in these wetlands, a system of channels and sluices has been constructed in the last 5 years. Recently second-hand windmills have been installed to complete the system of channels and sluices. Parallel to that continuous studies are undertaken to monitor progress and to identify the actual functioning of the channels. Accordingly to the recommendations coming from scientists and practitioners this system works and with help from volunteers and specialists at the Adam Mickiewicz University of Poznan the monitoring works will be continued.
