The long-term objective of this Program is to contribute to the conservation of biodiversity and sustainable use of natural resources in the MAR region by supporting the development and long-term persistence of a network of coastal and marine priority conservation areas.
Based on the needs of the protected areas in the region, some of the activities that will be supported through this program include:
• Protected area planning and management
• Infrastructure and equipment
• Development / evaluation / update of financial plans (plans that can provide viable income generation strategies for the long term.
• Development and implementation of monitoring plans and procedures (all required monitoring activities within a PA)
• Development of co-administration models (formal public-private agreements for the co-administration of areas)
• Surveillance and enforcement (ensure effective application of the law)
• Promotion of sustainable use practices of resources (sustainable use of local resources, processing for added value, and marketing of products)
• Design of new coastal and marine protected areas or expansion of existing areas
• Training and organizational strengthening (provide the required skills for effective management of protected areas and the resources within the areas and in their zones of influence)
• Effective coordination of the network of PAs (create a coordinating unit that establish comunication between the parties involved)
