Co-management of artisanal fisheries logo The objective of this program is to support the design, establishment, management and monitoring of co-management mechanisms for fisheries resources by organized groups of fishermen. In addition, it will support alternative community productive projects that can reduce the pressure on fisheries.

An effective way to apply regulations and better fishing practices is through the participation of fishermen in the management of their resources. For the fishermen to become involved, the appropriate mechanisms must be established. Examples of these mechanisms include fishing concessions, management and co-management of protected areas, and the establishment of community no-take zones, among others.

MAR Fund offered a series of workshops in the region. These workshops were designed and offered by Comunidad y Biodiversidad, A.C. (COBI), a Mexican NGO with ample experience in the establishment of community no-take zones. These workshops included a series of theory and practice sessions throughout three days, in which the participants were provided with information on ecosystem-based management of fisheries resources.

The participants in the workshops included community fishing groups; national authorities on protected areas and fisheries; academia; local, national, and international NGOs, and regional organizations.

As a result of the workshops, fishing communities in the four countries have become very interested in developing co-management projects on their own in two of the four countries of the ecoregion.
